Let’s trace a history of noise-making through the sonic projects of three queer artists who use screams, growls, chaotic tempo, and shifts in vocal register to produce a sound scape of outrage, refusal, fury, and resistance. These artists inhabit sonic gestures that signify through loss of control, modes of bodily rebellion, and lyrical excess. They tear up not only harmony and purity, but even the subgenres like punk out of which they emerge are torn to shreds by these angry voices of mostly female singers. In listening to these voices as song, as music, as urgent intrusions of voice, we turn away from the grand drama of the symphony and attend to the sound of violence.
